PATTAYA, Thailand – A 37-year-old department store employee, Ms. Ratana (last name withheld), confessed to fabricating a robbery story after allegedly losing 32,000 baht and an engagement ring, fearing repercussions from her British boyfriend. The incident, initially reported as a violent robbery by three drug-addicted youths, has led to charges of filing a false police report.
On May 25th, 2025, at 11:30 AM, police from Banglamung Police Station, led by Pol. Col. Sarawut Nuchanart and Pol. Lt. Col. Kornphong Sukwisit, investigated the alleged robbery in Soi Siam Country Club. Ms. Ratana claimed she was ambushed by three youths on two motorcycles while riding home, alleging they threatened her with a knife and stole 32,000 baht and an engagement ring.
However, police investigations revealed no evidence to support her claims. CCTV footage from the area showed no suspicious activity during the alleged time of the incident, only capturing Ms. Ratana, police, and reporters at the scene later. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact her, police brought Ms. Ratana in for further questioning.
During a one-hour interrogation, Ms. Ratana admitted to fabricating the story to deceive her British boyfriend after allegedly losing the money and ring. She intended to use a police report to convince him of the robbery, fearing his anger. However, the situation escalated when reporters learned of the incident and accompanied her to the scene, turning it into a widely publicized story. Visibly distressed and tearful, Ms. Ratana apologized to the police, expressing regret for her actions.
Pol. Lt. Col. Kornphong revealed that the investigation team reviewed CCTV footage extensively and found no evidence of the alleged crime. After internal discussions, they concluded the story was fabricated. Ms. Ratana’s confession confirmed their suspicions, and she now faces charges for filing a false report, an offense that has caused distress to the police and the community.
The incident has also taken a personal toll on Ms. Ratana, a single mother, who revealed that her British boyfriend ended their relationship upon learning the truth. Police stated that this case serves as a warning against making false police reports, which is a criminal act.
